Nigeria is the first African team to arrive in South Africa, at King Shaka International Airport north of Durban, for the Soccer World Cup.
The team was expected yesterday, but was delayed, due to what has been described by their management as "technical problems". The Super Eagles are the first World Cup team to be based in KwaZulu-Natal. They arrived directly from London on a chartered flight. They will now drive to Richards Bay where they will be based. The Eagles are in Group B with Greece, the Korean Republic and Argentina. They will start their campaign on June 12 against Argentina at Coca Cola Park in Johannesburg, Gauteng.
The South African Police Services (SAPS) says it is satisfied with the deployment of 40 000 police in all nine host cities during the FIFA 2010 World Cup. SAPS spokesperson Brigadier Sally de Beer was responding to concerns that the number may not be sufficient to meet the challenges posed by events of this nature. De Beer says they have been planning for several years now, and have got a lot of experience with major events.
She says they have had over 140 successful major events since 1994. "We do know how and where to deploy our members and we are very satisfied that our plans are in place, we have started deploying our members and we can secure this event successfully," De Beer said.
Brazil received a rapturous welcome when they arrived in Harare for this afternoon's warm-up match against Zimbabwe. The five-times World Champions chose the 110th ranked team in the world as opposition because of Zimbabwe's proximity to South Africa.
