The Korean team that will square up against the Super Eagles in Group B at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, is gradually taking shape with the trimming of the 30-man preliminary list to 26 yesterday.
Defenders Hwang Jae-Won of Pohang Steelers and Suwon Bluewings’ Kang Min-Soo will not make the trip to South Africa, while Suwon midfielder Cho Won-Hee and Kim Chi-Woo of FC Seoul were also left out.
According to a report on FIFA website, Korea’s coach, Huh Jung-moo made the decision on Monday morning after watching the 2002 semi-finalists defeat Ecuador 2-0 in a friendly match at Seoul World Cup Stadium.
However, there are still a few injury worries for the coach as midfielder Kim Jae-Sung limped off in the game against the South Americans.
Sung is expected to recover fully by next week, however a thigh injury could keep striker Lee Dong-Gook out of action for up to two or three weeks.
Korea Republic is in the Group B of the World Cup alongside Argentina, Greece and Nigeria.
Their next build-up game comes up on May 24 in Saitama against fellow World Cup qualifiers Japan, before they fly to Austria for a training camp ahead of another friendly match against Belarus on May 30.
Its last build up match will be against European champions; Spain on June 4.
The Super Eagles face Korea on June 22 in Durban. The game is the final group game for the Eagles.
Already, FIFA has set a deadline of May 31st for the submission of the final list of players for all participating teams at the World Cup.
Nigerian coach, Lars Lagerback, on Monday May 10, 2010 released a provisional list of 30 players, from which the final 23 will be selected for competition in South Africa.
Nigeria plays its opening game on June 12 against Argentina at the Ellis Park Stadium in Durban.
