Ghana's President John Evans Atta Mills has directed that Ghana observes three days of national mourning during which all flags will fly at half mast in honour of the late Nigerian president Umaru Musa Yar'Adua.
The Nigerian President died on Wednesday after a long battle with a heart ailment.
Deputy Information Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa told the media that it is significant for Ghana to observe three days of national mourning for the late Nigerian leader due to the long-standing relationship between the two countries.
He said Ghana has taken this huge step to further move away from the normal issuing of releases expressing condolences to families and nations that have lost a key figure.
Funeral rites for the late Nigerian leader were held in his hometown state of Katsina.
The late Nigerian leader died Wednesday night and in conformity with Islamic conventions, he is being buried Thursday after acting President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn in as President.
