Somalia: Rapist whipped 100 strokes

Islamist insurgents in Somalia have given a man who was accused of rape 100 lashes in the central town of Baledweyn, officials and residents said on Sunday.
The rapist Mohamed Sharif Hassan was lashed in front of hundreds of people in the strategic town of Baledweyn, some 330 kilometers north of the capital Mogadishu.
Islamist rebels also ordered Sharif to pay the dowry of the victim who lost her hymen during the act and was banished from the region for a year.
Abdullah Abdurrahman a judge for an Islamic militant group of Al-shabaab said the culprit admitted to the charge. He said the convict could have been stoned to death but for his bachelorhood.
